Luc Gyselen joined the firm after a long career in government, primarily at the European Commission (EC). His competition law practice includes strategic and compliance advice, representations before the EC and certain EU Member State agencies, as well as litigation before the EU General Court or the Court of Justice of the EU.Government ExperienceBefore joining the firm in 2004, Luc held several senior positions at the Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission (DG COMP). As head of a unit, he played a key role in numerous cartel and abuse of dominance cases, particularly in the banking, insurance, food, and pharmaceutical sectors. Prior to that, as special assistant to the Director-General of DG COMP, he oversaw the entire implementation of the EU competition policy, including the introduction of EC merger control, and acted as a liaison between DG COMP and the Commissioner responsible for competition policy and their staff.In the early years of his career, Luc was a member of the legal service of the European Commission and a law clerk at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg, where he worked with Judge Joliet.Luc is involved in EC competition cases "across all areas" (i.e., mergers, antitrust cases, and state aid). Since 2008, Luc has been a non-governmental advisor (NGA) to the EC. In this role, he participates in annual conferences or workshops organized by the International Competition Network (ICN).
